Veggie Oil Adventure to Latin America
previous day

DAY 11 Sun February 29th, 2004
North of Hermosillo MEXICO to Navojata

We woke the next morning to gunshots... Not just a few but a lot. Turns out we had parked about 1/2 mile from a firing range, and I guess the thing to do first thing Sunday morning is to go to shoot your guns. For hours and hours!

We got on the road and drove through Magdelena; a cute town square but we didn’t stop. Except to change some money cause we would need it for toll roads.

In Guyamas we had great Fish Tacos. We went for a walk around the block and happened upon a Hardware store! What luck. We bought some PVC glue. And looked at other tools. Then we got back on the road.

When we got to Novojata it was time to pump oil as the sun was already going down and were at a 1/4 tank. So we pulled onto a side steet and tried to refill our tank, but we were still having problems with our veggie-oil pump. Even though it had been a warm day the oil was either too thick, or we had an air leak in one of the fittings, or maybe the filter was clogged? Anyway we had to figure it out. So as the sun went down we started dissasembling our filter wand and cleaning it. We cleaned the filter, glued the joints up and then put it back to together. I had Kris hold her fingers over the holes while I blew air into it and we discovered that there was still a leak between the metal and the plastic fittings. I tried some teflon tape on the threads and that helped. We tried to pump some oil and met with better success, although one or two of the containers seemed to be too thick, somehow we were still sucking air into the line. But we managed to refill.

Now it was dark and we had to find a place to sleep. We drove out of town and managed to find a another field. This wasn’t like the last one which was a more like grazing land with shrubs and small trees. We were basically parked in the middle of a bunch of crop fields. But off the raod and out of the way, and with our dirty suburban, we actually look like a lot of the mexican vehicles you see out and about. Besides worst thing that would probaby happen is we’d have to wake up and move the truck cause some farmer would be unhappy. So we drank the rest of the wine from the previous night and headed to sleep.
